Imports into the U.S.
In March-April 2022, the U.S. crude oil imports reached a record high of $17 billion per month. The U.S. paid twice as much for oil imports in January-April than it did last year (IndexBox estimates). Imports peaked in Apr 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
On contrast, the volume of imports of crude petroleum oil into the United States dropped to 24M tons in April 2022, reducing by -8.2% on the previous month.
Imports by Country
In Mar 2022, Canada (17M tons) constituted the largest crude oil supplier to the United States, with a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, crude oil imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Mexico (2.6M tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Saudi Arabia (2.1M tons), with an 8% share.
From Jan 2022 to Mar 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Canada totaled +683.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Mexico (-94.6% per month) and Saudi Arabia (+7,911.6% per month).
In value terms, Canada ($10.3B) constituted the largest supplier of crude oil to the United States, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Mexico ($1.8B), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with a 9.1% share.
From Jan 2022 to Mar 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value from Canada amounted to +118,250,921.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Mexico (+3,897,487.2% per month) and Saudi Arabia (+1,136,612,044.2% per month).
Import Prices by Country
The average crude oil import price stood at $642 per ton in Mar 2022, with an increase of 14% against the previous month.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In Mar 2022, the highest price was recorded for prices from Russia ($759 per ton) and Colombia ($734 per ton), while the price for Iraq ($578 per ton) and Canada ($605 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
