World Consumption of Abrasives (Natural)

In 2023, global abrasives consumption totaled 133M tons, increasing by 2.6% against 2022 figures. Over the period under review, consumption showed a resilient expansion. Global consumption peaked at 136M tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The global abrasives market value expanded to $50.2B in 2023, increasing by 1.9% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption posted a resilient increase. Global consumption peaked at $50.7B in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Consumption By Country

The country with the largest volume of abrasives consumption was China (25M tons), accounting for 19% of total volume. Moreover, abrasives consumption in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, India (9.9M tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Turkey (6.2M tons), with a 4.7% share.

In China, abrasives consumption increased at an average annual rate of +17.9% over the period from 2013-2023. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+17.0% per year) and Turkey (+14.8% per year).

In value terms, France ($7.6B), the UK ($6.1B) and China ($5.8B) constituted the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2023, with a combined 39% share of the global market.

France, with a CAGR of +22.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of market size among the main consuming countries over the period under review, while market for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The countries with the highest levels of abrasives per capita consumption in 2023 were Turkey (73 kg per person), the UK (67 kg per person) and France (65 kg per person).

In 2023, global abrasives production totaled 134M tons, growing by 2.4% on 2022. In general, production posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 69% against the previous year. Global production peaked at 137M tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, production remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, abrasives production totaled $50.9B in 2023 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production attained the peak level at $51.1B in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, production failed to regain momentum.

Production By Country

The country with the largest volume of abrasives production was China (25M tons), comprising approx. 19% of total volume. Moreover, abrasives production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (10M tons), threefold. Turkey (6.7M tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 5% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume in China stood at +18.0%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: India (+14.6% per year) and Turkey (+14.3% per year).

Imports

World Imports of Abrasives (Natural)

In 2023, after two years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of abrasives (natural), when their volume decreased by -3.5% to 1.6M tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2013 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 27%. Global imports peaked at 1.7M tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, abrasives imports fell to $358M in 2023. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2013 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 34%. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at $413M in 2022, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports By Country

The United States (237K tons) and China (197K tons) represented roughly 28% of total imports in 2023. Bangladesh (107K tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 6.9% share, followed by the United Arab Emirates (5.7%), the UK (5.7%) and the Netherlands (5.3%). Saudi Arabia (57K tons), Canada (49K tons), Sweden (46K tons) and South Korea (42K tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +22.3%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest abrasives importing markets worldwide were the United States ($43M), the Netherlands ($27M) and the United Arab Emirates ($21M), with a combined 25% share of global imports. China, the UK, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Canada, South Korea and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +23.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices By Country

The average abrasives import price stood at $230 per ton in 2023, declining by -10% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when the average import price increased by 9.7%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $256 per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($321 per ton), while China ($104 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+10.7%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports

World Exports of Abrasives (Natural)

After five years of growth, overseas shipments of abrasives (natural) decreased by -8.4% to 2.6M tons in 2023. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum at 2.8M tons in 2022, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, abrasives exports contracted modestly to $373M in 2023. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2013 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum at $381M in 2022, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Exports By Country

Greece represented the major exporting country with an export of around 823K tons, which resulted at 32% of total exports. Turkey (421K tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Australia (11%), South Africa (8.6%), China (7.8%), India (6%) and Indonesia (4.7%).

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +43.4%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest abrasives supplying countries worldwide were Australia ($72M), China ($48M) and South Africa ($38M), with a combined 42% share of global exports.

South Africa, with a CAGR of +40.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

The average abrasives export price stood at $144 per ton in 2023, picking up by 6.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $160 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($253 per ton), while Greece ($20 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+2.3%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
