Abu Dhabi Airports Experience Unprecedented Growth in 2024

Abu Dhabi Airports has reported a significant 28.1% increase in passenger traffic for 2024, marking a substantial rise in global aviation activity. According to Gulf Business, passenger numbers soared to 29.4 million compared to 22.9 million in the previous year.

The remarkable surge was largely driven by Zayed International Airport (AUH), which introduced 29 new routes and expanded its network to over 125 destinations. This expansion was complemented by the addition of eight new airlines, including notable carriers like British Airways and Air Astana. As a result, aircraft movements increased by 10%, from 226,362 in 2023 to 249,747 in 2024, while key markets such as the UK, India, Qatar, and Egypt played pivotal roles in boosting demand.

Abu Dhabi Airports also saw significant growth in cargo traffic, handling 678,990 tonnes in 2024, a 21% increase from the previous year. This growth was supported by key infrastructure developments, including the Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project and the inauguration of the region's first US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility. Enhancements such as biometric touchpoints at AUH further streamlined passenger experience.

Furthering its commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, Abu Dhabi Airports achieved the ACI Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation. It introduced initiatives like the Sensory Space and the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Programme. In parallel, the Abu Dhabi Airports Free Zone (ADAFZ) saw expansion, including the development of advanced warehouses.

Additionally, the opening of AUHotel, a modern 138-room hotel within Zayed International Airport, provided enhanced comfort for travelers, while talent development initiatives led to a 44.3% Emiratisation rate, ensuring a skilled workforce for the future.

Elena Sorlini, MD and CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports, stated that 2024 was a "highly successful year," positioning the company well for continued growth as a key player in the global aviation landscape.
