AD Ports Group and CMA CGM Partner to Develop Congo's Largest Port

AD Ports Group has signed a shareholders agreement with the CMA CGM Group to jointly develop, manage, and operate the New East Mole multipurpose terminal at the Port of Pointe Noire in the Republic of Congo. Major Developments and Strategic Goals

The terminal, which is expected to handle containers, general cargo, break-bulk, and other freight, marks a significant milestone for AD Ports Group following its acquisition of a 30-year extendable concession for the terminal in June 2023. Under the terms of their agreement, AD Ports Group and CMA CGM's subsidiary, CMA Terminals, will form a joint venture, with AD Ports Group holding a majority stake. This collaboration comes on the heels of CMA Terminals Khalifa Port's inauguration in December 2024, which is projected to elevate the port's container capacity by 33% to 7.8 million TEUs in 2024.

Infrastructure Investment and Environmental Commitment

AD Ports Group has earmarked an investment of approximately $220 million (DHs807 million) for the first phase of the terminal development, which includes the construction of a 400-metre quay wall and a 10-hectare logistics area. The project also highlights significant strides in environmental sustainability, with the deployment of three Super Post-Panamax Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes and nine hybrid Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes. These innovations are expected to reduce diesel consumption by up to 60% and cut carbon emissions by approximately 5,000 tonnes annually.

Economic and Operational Impact

The agreement significantly reinforces CMA CGM's influence, as the group currently leads in exports and ranks second in imports and transshipment from the Republic of Congo with an overall market share of approximately 35% in container volumes. Christine Cabau Woehrel, EVP for Assets and Operations at CMA CGM Group, expressed optimism about the partnership: "Our investment with AD Ports Group at the Port of Pointe Noire is a new milestone in our strategic collaboration. We look forward to bringing this sustainable approach's operational and economic benefits to the Republic of the Congo and its importers and exporters." The terminal's development aligns with projected annual growth of 3 to 5 per cent in the country's container volumes over the medium term, promising significant economic contributions to the Congolese economy.
