Affirm Holdings Reports Surprise Profit, Shares Soar 18%

In a significant financial upturn, shares of Affirm Holdings surged by 18% following its unexpected profit announcement, marking a notable development for the buy now, pay later (BNPL) sector. According to Investopedia, the company reported fiscal 2025 Q2 earnings per share (EPS) of $0.23, defying analyst predictions of a $0.10 loss. The fintech firm also saw its revenue spike by nearly 47% to $866.4 million, far exceeding expectations.

The impressive financial results can be attributed to Affirm's expanding customer base, which grew 19% to 21 million active users. Additionally, the transactions per active customer increased by over 20% to an average of 5.3 per user. The company's gross merchandise volume (GMV), an essential metric in evaluating retail and financial services, increased by 35% to $10.1 billion, surpassing market forecasts.

CEO Max Levchin shared in a letter to shareholders that the firm had "another record-setting holiday shopping season," highlighting Affirm's robust performance across various retail categories. Despite being months away from its target to achieve positive operating income, Levchin noted that the company is "nearly there today," as their operating loss significantly decreased from $172.2 million the previous year to just $4.3 million this period.

The positive financial results have propelled Affirm's stock to its highest level in three years, with shares appreciating approximately 60% over the last 12 months, indicating strong investor confidence in its growth trajectory.
