Affirm's Shares Surge 16% Following Surprising Quarterly Profit

Affirm Holdings Inc. experienced a remarkable 16% surge in premarket trading this past Friday, thanks to a surprising quarterly profit announcement driven by a robust holiday shopping season. The company's financial strides were bolstered by enticing discounts on a wide range of products, from apparel to electronics, attracting budget-conscious consumers, while online sales remained resilient.

In an impressive show of performance, the buy now, pay later lender reported a 35% increase in gross merchandise volume (GMV), reaching $10.1 billion in the second quarter ending December 31, surpassing analyst predictions of $9.57 billion as per data from LSEG. This growth trajectory could potentially boost Affirm's market capitalization by approximately $3 billion if these gains persist.

According to a shareholder letter published late on Thursday, the strong performance in the merchandise and consumer electronics segments substantially contributed to Affirm's growth metrics. The GMV from its top five merchants and platform partners surged by 40%, driven by escalating consumer demand for zero-percent financing options.

The San Francisco-based fintech company's total revenue climbed an impressive 47% to $866 million, outstripping projected estimates of $807.2 million. Affirm delivered a net income of $80.4 million, or 23 cents per share, for the October-to-December period, in stark contrast to the previous year's loss of $166.9 million, or 54 cents per share. Analysts had initially forecasted a 15-cent per share loss. This stellar performance marks a noteworthy achievement in a quarter where many fintechs displayed moderate growth yet struggled with profitability margins.

Looking ahead, Affirm has set a bullish fiscal 2025 revenue forecast, estimated between $3.13 billion and $3.19 billion, which significantly surpasses the Wall Street consensus of $3.09 billion.
