In a remarkable turn for the holiday shopping season of 2024, AI-powered chatbots significantly contributed to an uplift in online sales in the United States by nearly 4% year-over-year. According to a report by Salesforce, this period saw retailers effectively leveraging advanced conversational customer services to facilitate both purchases and returns.

The report highlights a notable increase in online sales, rising from $272 billion in the previous year to $282 billion during the timeframe from November 1 to December 31, surpassing Salesforce's forecast of a 2% increase even amidst moderated discounts. Shoppers utilized AI-based chatbot services 42% more compared to the previous year, emphasizing the growing reliance on these digital tools.

Global online sales influenced by AI surged to $229 billion during the holiday season, up from $199 billion in 2023. However, the report also flagged a high product return rate at 28%, a significant increase from 20% in 2023, which could pose challenges to profit margins for retailers. Caila Schwartz, Director of Consumer Insights at Salesforce, noted that while AI and virtual agents have shown benefits, they will be crucial in addressing revenue losses from returns and re-engaging customers as the year progresses.

The use of smartphones in placing orders peaked on Christmas day, with mobile devices accounting for about 79% of all orders placed during the holiday season. Additionally, social media platforms like TikTok Shop and Instagram played a pivotal role by driving 14% of all traffic to e-commerce sites, demonstrating their effectiveness in generating shopper interest beyond AI solutions.
