The recent unveiling of a cutting-edge AI model by China's DeepSeek has stirred apprehensions within the investment community, casting doubt on whether the AI spending surge may slow as companies discover cost-effective alternatives to achieve their AI objectives. Yahoo Finance reported that this development led to a substantial sell-off in Nvidia's (NVDA) stock, driven by speculation that future investments might veer away from Nvidia's high-priced AI chips. However, sustained spending by major tech firms contradicts these fears.

A striking instance reinforcing robust AI investment occurred recently when Alphabet (GOOGL GOOG) announced its intention to allocate $75 billion to capital expenditure in 2025, significantly surpassing Wall Street's expectation of $57.9 billion. This move serves as a "reminder that capex plans for AI and data center spending remain strong," according to Fundstrat's head of research, Tom Lee.

Responding to these dynamics, Nvidia shares surged by more than 4% midweek as a testament to continued faith in the company's chip technology. Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya maintained a Buy rating for Nvidia stock, setting a price target at $190 per share. Arya noted the resilience in "cloud capex intentions" among Nvidia's major clients like Microsoft (MSFT) and Meta (META), dismissing concerns around DeepSeek's potential disruptions.

Conversely, AMD (AMD) faced a roughly 7% decline in its stock value, attributed to investor dissatisfaction with the company's data center business outlook. Stifel's applied technology analyst Ruben Roy, however, interprets AMD's setback as a short-term challenge rather than a reflection of overall market trends. Roy emphasized continuing "hyperscaler spending on AI infrastructure," forecasting long-term benefits for both AMD and Nvidia in the ongoing investment cycle.
