Airbus Delays Hydrogen-Powered Aircraft Development to 2040s

In a strategic pivot, Airbus has announced a delay in its ambitious plan to develop a hydrogen-powered commercial aircraft by the mid-2030s. This decision, covered by Reuters, highlights slower than anticipated technological advancements as a key factor behind the postponement. Originally scheduled to debut around 2035, the project is now not expected to reach completion until the early 2040s.

The delay represents a significant challenge to Airbus's vision of leading the shift towards more sustainable aviation fuel solutions, a project that has been a focal point of CEO Guillaume Faury's environmental strategy since its initiation in 2015. According to the Force Ouvriere union, the technology required for the hydrogen aircraft is lagging behind by five to ten years compared to the initial plans, presenting obstacles to meeting the stringent emissions reduction targets.
