Canada's Alberta province, a significant gas producer, is strategizing to extend its market reach in Japan amidst a looming U.S. tariff threat on energy exports. In a recent interview with Reuters, Rebecca Schulz, Alberta's Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, emphasized the importance of diversifying export markets. Alberta identifies Japan as a pivotal partner due to existing strong relations, and aims to expand these ties further.

Schulz engaged with various Japanese stakeholders, including officials from JERA and JOGMEC, to discuss Alberta's competitive advantages, such as shorter shipping durations compared to the U.S. Gulf Coast and reduced geopolitical risks. These discussions align with Alberta's goal of enhancing energy security in collaboration with Japan.

According to available data from the IndexBox platform, Canada's export value of liquefied petroleum gases and other gaseous hydrocarbons surged to reach USD 3.9 million in 2024 from USD 847.6 thousand in 2023. Notably, China led as the top export destination in 2023, accounting for USD 688.9 thousand, followed by Germany and South Korea. In contrast, Canada's import value in this sector expanded significantly, totaling USD 224 million in 2024 from USD 49.7 million in 2023, with the United States being the primary source (USD 30.4 million).

Schulz highlighted various projects aimed at boosting Alberta's export capacity, presenting numerous opportunities for strengthening partnerships with Japan, thus positioning this relationship as a primary focus for the provincial government.
