Alibaba Sells Sun Art Stake to DCP Capital

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. has agreed to sell its substantial shareholding in Sun Art Retail Group Ltd. to private equity firm DCP Capital. The sale is expected to yield gross proceeds of up to HK$12.3 billion ($1.6 billion), marking a significant retreat from physical commerce endeavors for China's e-commerce giant.

The transaction comes as Alibaba continues to realign its business under the leadership of CEO Eddie Wu, prioritizing technological advancements and international e-commerce ventures. The Sun Art divestment follows closely on the heels of other asset disposals, including the recent sale of Intime department store business, signifying a definitive shift towards prioritizing its digital marketplace offerings. Sun Art's market value experienced an 80% uptick over the past year, reaching an approximate $3 billion valuation before the sale.

This latest development underscores Alibaba's response to the increasing competition from PDD Holdings Inc. and ByteDance Ltd. The consolidation of its domestic and international e-commerce operations under Jiang Fan's leadership is further indication of Alibaba's renewed focus on strengthening its online markets.
