Cohen's observations were made in response to discussions around the meme coin ecosystem on Pump.fun interfering with the altcoin price cycle.

The altcoin market has been challenging, particularly in recent months. According to data from the IndexBox platform, the Total3 indicator, which monitors the market capitalization of altcoins excluding Bitcoin and Ethereum, climbed to around $788 billion in March 2024. However, a significant downturn followed by April 2024, only correcting in November 2024, post a political shift with Donald Trump's re-election as U.S. president. Despite the oversaturation, some altcoins have managed to maintain stability due to institutional support. Institutional buying, explained by Yat Siu, co-founder of Animoca Brands, helps keep these altcoins stable when bought on open markets instead of private sales.

This sentiment of market saturation is echoed by many experts who argue that the overwhelming number of competing altcoins makes it difficult for investors to identify projects with genuine potential. As the debate continues between those in search of technological progression and others driven by short-term speculation, the repeated emphasis remains on the necessity for altcoins to establish their real-world value beyond mere speculative interest.
