Alta Resource Technologies Secures $5.1 Million for Rare Earth Element Extraction

Alta Resource Technologies, a Colorado-based innovator in mineral separation, announced on Tuesday that it has successfully raised $5.1 million in an oversubscribed seed funding round. Utilizing advanced biochemistry technology developed in collaboration with researchers from Pennsylvania State University and licensed from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Alta is set to transform the supply chain for rare earth elements such as neodymium and dysprosium. These elements are crucial for the production of electric vehicle motors, wind turbines, and defense technologies. Alta's unique approach employs custom-engineered proteins that act as microscopic robots to achieve high purity separations cost-effectively. The process targets abundant low-grade sources as well as end-of-life products that conventional methods cannot efficiently process.

The growing demand for rare earth metals is expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.4% from 2024 to 2033, according to data from the IndexBox platform. This surge underscores the importance of securing a domestic supply chain, given that the US currently has only one active rare earth mine, MP Materials' Mountain Pass in California. To address this, the Department of Defense has executed a strategic approach to guarantee ongoing access to these vital materials, essential for manufacturing permanent magnets used in military weapon systems.

Alta has also been fortunate to secure nearly $1 million in additional grant funding from federal sources, including the Department of Defense's DARPA and the State of Colorado. Previous investments came from Baruch Future Ventures and Climate Capital (now Juniper). Alta CEO Nathan Ratledge, PhD, noted in the announcement, "Biology has solved the problem of ultra-selective mineral separation over billions of years, but translating that into practical applications has been elusive - until now. Our technology leverages specially engineered proteins that can bind to specific metals with unprecedented selectivity, even at low concentrations in complex mixtures."

Ratledge further emphasized that by using these proteins in a scalable, continuous process, Alta is unlocking substantial untapped mineral resources domestically. This breakthrough aids in reinforcing supply chains and fortifying national security, setting a new benchmark for environmentally responsible mining practices.
