Altria Faces Profit Dip Amid Increasing Vape Competition

Marlboro maker Altria has cautioned that its annual adjusted profits might fall below expectations, largely due to the escalating competition from rival vape brands in the market and an ongoing decline in cigarette demand. According to Reuters, this announcement has led to a 2% dip in the company's shares during premarket trading, despite an impressive 30% rise in 2024.

The Richmond, Virginia-based company reported an 8.8% decrease in its domestic cigarette shipment volume in the fourth quarter ending December 31, compared to a 7.6% drop in the same period the previous year. This trend aligns with data from IndexBox, which shows that the export value of cigarettes containing tobacco in the United States was $221.7 million in 2024, up from $172.4 million in 2023.

Altria's annual revenue, net of excise taxes, stood at $5.15 billion, surpassing the expected $5.05 billion. The company maintained its adjusted profit per share for the quarter at $1.29, meeting estimates. However, the forecasted annual adjusted earnings range of $5.22 to $5.37 per share falls short of the analysts' average of $5.35, as compiled by LSEG.

Adding to its challenges, U.S. regulators have proposed capping nicotine levels in cigarettes, a move that could potentially wipe out most cigarettes from the market. Meanwhile, higher investments in diversifying its portfolio towards tobacco alternatives have incurred increased promotional expenses.

Despite these hurdles, Altria announced a $1 billion share repurchase program, signaling confidence in its strategy to navigate the evolving regulatory landscape and market dynamics. The company's top export markets for 2024 included Canada ($64.5 million) and Mexico ($45.8 million), with major imports coming from Mexico ($93 million) and Canada ($52.8 million).
