E-commerce leaders Amazon.com and MercadoLibre are set to capitalize on Mexico's recent implementation of a 19% tax on low-cost imports from countries lacking free trade agreements, such as China. According to a detailed report by Reuters, these changes chiefly impact Asian retailers such as Shein and Temu, who had previously taken advantage of exemptions on imports valued at under $50. The move could result in an increased market share for Amazon and MercadoLibre, who are already key players in the Mexican online retail space.

The introduction of these duties amid ongoing trade tensions highlights Mexico's approach to regulating the entry of products, particularly taking aim at contraband goods from Asia. This strategic economic decision aligns with recent tariffs, including a 15% rate on raw textiles and a 35% duty on finished fabric-based goods, aimed at curbing unfair competition in the domestic market. Amid these shifts, analysts from Itau BBA suggest that Amazon, with about 30% of its goods in Mexico originating from international sources, mostly the U.S., is well-positioned to thrive.
