Amazon Exits Quebec, Resulting in Significant Job Losses

E-commerce behemoth Amazon.com has announced its decision to withdraw operations in Quebec, resulting in approximately 1,700 full-time job cuts. This decision, as reported by Yahoo Finance, marks a significant shift in its Canadian operations, impacting seven sites in the province.

Amazon's retreat from Quebec sees a return to a third-party delivery model, a logistical strategy Amazon relied upon prior to 2020. According to a company spokesperson, this transition is aimed at maximizing savings for customers in the region. The changes will unfold over the next two months and also affect 250 seasonal workers. Affected employees are being offered a package that includes up to 14 weeks of pay alongside transitional benefits such as job placement resources.

Despite this shift, opposition has arisen from Quebec's workers' unions. The Canadian labor union Confederation des syndicats nationaux (CSN), which represents 300 unionized workers at a site north of Montreal, has criticized Amazon's decision, suggesting it targets the company's only unionized warehouse in Canada. The union, in its ongoing efforts, was negotiating its first collective agreement when the announcement was made.

Caroline Senneville, CSN president, firmly stated that the site closures are part of an anti-union strategy and pose a contradiction to the Quebec Labour Code, a claim the union is prepared to contest.
