American Airlines Predicts Larger Losses for Early 2025, Shares Plummet

American Airlines has announced that its earnings outlook for the first quarter of 2025 falls short of analysts' expectations, leading to a more than 6% drop in its shares. The detailed report can be found here. The airline anticipates an adjusted loss per share ranging from 20 to 40 cents, significantly wider than the 4 cent loss forecasted by analysts at LSEG. The bleak outlook is attributed to current demand trends and volatile fuel prices.

In its forward-looking statement, American Airlines indicated that its unit costs, excluding fuel, are expected to increase in the low-single digit percentages during Q1 2024, driven by an anticipated reduction in capacity by as much as 2% compared to the previous year. According to data from the IndexBox platform, the recent trend of decreasing airline capacity seems poised to continue, potentially impacting broader market dynamics.

In contrast, American Airlines reported a stronger performance for the last quarter of 2024, achieving a profit of $590 million, a significant rise from the $19 million in the same period the previous year.
