American Cruise Vacations Witness Slower Growth, But Remain Popular

Nearly 19 million Americans are poised to embark on cruise vacations this year, marking another significant year for the cruise industry. According to a forecast by travel group AAA, the record volume is being driven by continued interest in cruise travel, though the pace of growth may slow according to a Reuters report.

The AAA projects passenger volume for the current year to grow by 4.5% compared to 2024's 18.2 million passengers. While this increase is notable, it falls short of the 7.7% rise recorded last year, and the remarkable 42% growth seen in 2023. Despite the slower growth rate, 2025 is anticipated to mark the third consecutive year of record cruise passenger traffic.

The Caribbean remains the most popular destination for American cruisers, as operators like Royal Caribbean, Carnival Corp, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings report robust demand for itineraries. Last year saw a significant surge in the companies' stock values, with Royal Caribbean seeing a 78% increase, and Carnival and Norwegian Cruise experiencing substantial gains of 34% and 28%, respectively.

The AAA's forecast takes into account scheduled cruise itineraries covering all major vessels, alongside the economic outlook and prevailing trends in the travel sector.
