American Express Reports 12% Profit Jump Amid Strong Holiday Spending

Reuters reported that American Express experienced a 12% increase in fourth-quarter profit, driven by robust consumer spending during the holiday season on travel and online shopping. Amidst a declining rate environment, American Express managed to maintain spending volumes, showcasing resilience in challenging economic conditions.

The New York-based company, largely serving affluent individuals, saw billed business rise by 8% to $408.4 billion during the fourth quarter. This was indicative of a growing trend seen on platforms like IndexBox, highlighting the surge in consumer spending across various sectors. American Express's profit for the quarter ending December 31 increased to $2.17 billion, or $3.04 per share, compared to $1.93 billion, or $2.62 per share, the previous year.

Reflecting on the year's end, CEO Stephen Squeri stated, "We exited the year with increased momentum, with billings growth accelerating to 8% in the fourth quarter, driven by stronger spending from our consumer and commercial customers during the holiday season."

The company's revenue rose by 9% to reach $17.18 billion, further supported by a decline in provisions for credit losses, which decreased to $1.3 billion from $1.4 billion a year earlier. This trend aligns with broader economic data suggesting consumer confidence and spending capabilities remaining high, especially among affluent consumers who are less impacted by inflation and elevated borrowing costs.

Looking ahead, American Express anticipates earnings per share in 2025 to range between $15 and $15.50, surpassing analyst expectations of $15.23. Additionally, the company forecasts revenue growth between 8% and 10%, compared to Street estimates of 8.1%. Such optimistic projections reflect the company's robust performance and strategic positioning in the financial services sector.
