Anglo American Considers De Beers Spin-off as Botswana Eyes Larger Stake

Anglo American is edging closer to spinning off its prestigious diamond unit, De Beers, as the government of Botswana signals its interest in acquiring a larger stake in the leading diamond producer. According to Mining.com, Botswana currently holds a 15% share in De Beers, a stake valued at approximately $2.5 billion by analysts.

De Beers has been under consideration for divestment since May 2024, when Anglo American announced its intentions to either sell the unit or launch an initial public offering (IPO). This strategic shift followed the defense of a failed £39 billion ($49 billion) takeover bid by Australian competitor BHP. In its preparation, De Beers has halted sales of lab-grown diamonds via its Lightbox brand, indicating a focus on evaluating the future of this unit once current stocks are exhausted.

The recent finalization of new diamond sales agreements and the extension of mining licenses with Botswana, which run until 2054, have solidified De Beers' commitment in the region. As per a provisional agreement reached in 2023, Botswana's share of Debswana's production, a joint venture with De Beers, is set to increase gradually to 50%, with the state's diamond trading company expected to receive 30% of the output.

The diamond market's current unfavorable conditions, including weak demand from China and competition from lab-grown stones, have complicated the separation process. Despite projected annual core profits of $1.5 billion by 2028, De Beers only reported profits of $72 million last year. This economic climate could see De Beers remain part of Anglo American into the next year, depending on market recovery, according to Anglo CEO Duncan Wanblad.
