Anglo American Platinum Prepares for Spinoff Amid Investor Interest

Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) is experiencing significant investor interest as it prepares to spin off and become an independent entity from its parent company, Anglo American. As reported by Mining.com, Amplats CEO Craig Miller highlighted the spinoff as part of a broader corporate restructuring strategy to fend off a $49 billion takeover bid from larger rival, BHP.

The spin-off is slated to be completed by mid-year, and Amplats will undergo a name change following its new status. The company plans to secure a secondary listing on the London Stock Exchange, positioning itself as the sole producer of platinum group metals (PGMs) on the bourse, potentially drawing new investors.

South Africa, home to major platinum miners, reported an export value for platinum in unwrought or semi-manufactured forms, or in powder form of $10.7 billion in 2023, which slightly decreased to $9.6 billion in 2024, according to IndexBox data. The primary export destinations for South African platinum in 2024 were Japan ($2.9 billion), the United States ($2.7 billion), and the United Kingdom ($2 billion).

In contrast, imports of the same platinum forms in South Africa were valued at $88 million in 2023, dropping significantly to $31.1 million in 2024. The leading importation came from Belgium with $18 million in 2024, followed by Germany with $7.8 million.

The declining demand for PGMs poses a challenge, partly due to the rise in battery electric vehicles, which don't require PGMs. However, Miller remains optimistic, citing that the decrease in electric vehicle demand could revive interest in PGMs, especially given their crucial role in transportation technologies like hybrids and potentially hydrogen-powered vehicles in the future.

Furthermore, with no new significant supply pipelines for PGMs, the limited availability might support prices moving forward, providing a potentially lucrative opportunity for Amplats in its new independent journey.
