ArcelorMittal Increases Steel Coil Prices by EUR30/t in Europe

Global steelmaker ArcelorMittal has declared a EUR30/t price rise for steel coils across Europe, effective for April shipments. This development was reported by GMK Center, citing sources from Kallanish. The company's European production facilities are operating at full capacity with first-quarter orders already filled. In the new pricing structure, the base delivered price for hot-rolled coil is EUR660/t, while galvanized coil will increase to EUR780/t.

The price increment is influenced by EU import restrictions, driving buyers to focus on domestic markets. Additionally, an uptick in demand within some European countries is supporting higher quotes. The ongoing review of EU steel import safeguards, prompted by recommendations from the EUROFER Association, may further affect future pricing. EUROFER has suggested a quota reduction to align with the reduced EU steel demand and a hike in import duties to 32-41%. They also propose maintaining a 15% quota cap for categories like hot-rolled coils and wire rods.

Data from IndexBox highlights that Germany, a significant player in the steel industry, recorded an export value of USD 1.7 billion for flat hot-rolled steel coils in 2024 despite a higher 2023 figure of USD 2.5 billion. Belgium and France also featured prominently as major exporters in 2023, with values of USD 2.4 billion and USD 1.6 billion respectively. In terms of imports, Italy leads with a considerable USD 4 billion in 2024, underscoring its strong domestic demand. Spain follows with imports valued at USD 2.4 billion.

These dynamics in export and import values reflect the broader trends influencing European steel markets, including energy cost pressures and policy changes, which continue to steer the pricing strategies of major steel producers like ArcelorMittal.
