Argentina Achieves Record Trade Surplus Under President Javier Milei

Argentina has reported a remarkable $18.9 billion trade surplus for the year 2024, setting a new record. According to Reuters, this figure corresponds with the first full year of leadership under libertarian President Javier Milei.

The new trade surplus record surpasses the previous high of $16.89 billion from 2009, aligning with expectations from analysts who predicted the surplus would range between $18 billion and $19 billion. December alone saw a $1.67 billion surplus, making it the thirteenth consecutive month where export values have overcome import values, significantly surpassing the forecasted $921 million.

Milei, a far-right economist, has strategically aimed to enhance grain and energy exports while implementing austerity measures to combat hyperinflation in Argentina's economy. His efforts are evident in the nearly $80 billion export value recorded last year, with grains being a significant contributor.

Moreover, the country's robust export-driven strategy seeks to make Argentina a net energy exporter by leveraging its rich shale oil and gas reserves. Alongside energy advancements, the easing of currency controls has bolstered other export sectors, including agriculture and ranching, which have been pivotal to this trade surplus success.
