Poland Emerges as the Fastest-Growing Argon Market in the EU

IndexBox has just published a new report: 'EU - Argon - Market Analysis, Forecast, Size, Trends And Insights'. Here is a summary of the report's key findings.

The EU argon market amounted to $573M in 2019, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price).

Consumption by Country

The country with the largest volume of argon consumption was Germany (201M cubic meters), comprising approx. 22% of total volume. Moreover, argon consumption in Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, the Netherlands (100M cubic meters), twofold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Poland (84M cubic meters), with a 9.4% share.

From 2007 to 2019, the average annual growth rate of volume in Germany was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Netherlands (+4.9% per year) and Poland (+9.6% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($83M), Spain ($78M) and Italy ($77M) were the countries with the highest levels of market value in 2019, with a combined 42% share of the total market. These countries were followed by Poland, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, the Netherlands and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 37%.

The countries with the highest levels of argon per capita consumption in 2019 were Finland (8.17 cubic meters per person), the Netherlands (5.83 cubic meters per person) and the Czech Republic (4.29 cubic meters per person).

Market Forecast to 2030

Driven by increasing demand for argon in the European Union, the market is expected to continue an upward consumption trend over the next decade. Market performance is forecast to retain its current trend pattern, expanding with an anticipated CAGR of +1.1% for the period from 2019 to 2030, which is projected to bring the market volume to 1B cubic meters by the end of 2030.

Production in the EU

In 2019, the amount of argon produced in the European Union was estimated at 916M cubic meters, remaining constant against the previous year. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2007 to 2019; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. The volume of production peaked in 2019 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, argon production dropped modestly to $558M in 2019 estimated in export prices. In general, production saw a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 3.1% year-to-year. The level of production peaked at $877M in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2019, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production by Country

The countries with the highest volumes of argon production in 2019 were Germany (260M cubic meters), the Netherlands (133M cubic meters) and Belgium (85M cubic meters), together accounting for 52% of total production. Spain, Poland, the Czech Republic, Finland, Italy, France, the UK, Sweden and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.

From 2007 to 2019, the biggest increases were in the Czech Republic, while argon production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

In 2019, imports of argon in the European Union reduced to 228M cubic meters, waning by -10.8% against 2018 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2007 to 2019; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 23% y-o-y. As a result, imports attained the peak of 255M cubic meters, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, argon imports declined modestly to $123M (IndexBox estimates) in 2019. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of argon imports in 2019 were Italy (32M cubic meters), France (29M cubic meters) and the UK (23M cubic meters), together reaching 37% of total imports. Poland (15M cubic meters) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Germany (14M cubic meters) and Hungary (12M cubic meters). All these countries together occupied approx. 18% share of total imports. Ireland (9.1M cubic meters), Slovenia (8.8M cubic meters), Belgium (8.6M cubic meters), the Czech Republic (8.5M cubic meters), the Netherlands (8.2M cubic meters) and Sweden (7.8M cubic meters) occupied a minor share of total imports.

In value terms, the largest argon importing markets in the European Union were Italy ($17M), France ($12M) and the UK ($9.4M), together comprising 31% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Hungary, Slovenia, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Belgium and Sweden, which together accounted for a further 40%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2019, the argon import price in the European Union amounted to $0.5 per cubic meter, surging by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $0.8 per cubic meter. From 2009 to 2019, the growth in terms of the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($1 per cubic meter), while France ($0.4 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands, while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
