Ascot Resources Delays Premier Gold Project Restart Amid Financial Strain

Ascot Resources (TSX: AOT) announced a delay in the restart of milling activities at its Premier gold project in British Columbia, a decision that exacerbates the company's existing financial challenges. Mining.com reports that the company cited slower-than-expected underground development due to a shortage of skilled labor as the primary reason for the postponement.

Following the announcement, Ascot's stock tumbled 21.6%, reaching a 52-week low of C$0.14 per share, reflecting its lowest valuation since 2008. By midday Wednesday, the company's market capitalization was estimated at approximately C$139 million. This setback is yet another blow to Ascot, which has been targeting the restart of gold production at Premier in the second quarter of 2025. However, the timeline has now been pushed to July 2025.

The Premier project, situated 25 km from the town of Stewart, boasts a historical significance as a former major underground gold mine that began operations in 1918. It comprises four deposits: Silver Coin, Big Missouri, Premier, and Red Mountain. By 1952, when an unfortunate fire led to its closure, the Premier mine had produced over 2 million oz. of gold and 45 million oz. of silver.

Despite the planned restart delay, Ascot assures that both the mill and deposit are anticipated to perform in line with prior guidance. Nonetheless, the additional time required for underground development puts further pressure on the company's working capital. Ascot's President and CEO, Jim Currie, emphasized that "we are actively engaged in discussions with our major shareholders, debt providers, and bankers to address the funding gap."

In light of this, Ascot is exploring financial solutions, having previously secured a C$52 million funding package last November to progress the Premier project. The company's financial woes are compounded by C$27 million in obligations to its vendors.
