Asda's Sales Slump Continues Amidst Leadership Overhaul

The British supermarket giant Asda is facing turbulent times as it grapples with a significant decline in sales. According to a recent report, the retailer experienced a 5.2% drop in sales over the 12 weeks leading up to January 28, marking it as the only major retailer to register a fall within that period.

Data sourced from IndexBox also reveals that Asda's market share dwindled to 12.6% by the end of January, down from its previous standing of 13.6% in the same period last year. This persistent decline follows a disappointing Christmas trading period, marking Asda's worst performance since 2015. The deterioration has placed further pressure on the new chairman, Allan Leighton, who returned to helm the company last year with a mission to rejuvenate the business.

Asda's rivals, meanwhile, have been strengthening their positions in the market. Tesco has bolstered its market share to 28.5%, up from 27.8% from the previous year, while Sainsbury's saw a 4.2% increase in sales, pushing its market share to 15.9%.

In a bid to reclaim its competitive edge, Mr. Leighton has introduced sweeping price cuts with the renowned "Rollback" initiative, reducing prices by an average of 25% on over 4,000 products. This strategy harkens back to Asda's growth tactics of the 1990s, aimed at making the chain the most affordable traditional supermarket.

However, the road to recovery appears challenging as Asda remains without a permanent chief executive since August 2021. While Mohsin Issa managed daily operations until last year, a new CEO search is underway, with hopes pinned on finding a fresh leader capable of steering Asda back to profitability.

An Asda spokesperson commented on recent efforts, stating, "Our focus on providing great value for hard-working families is already making a difference, with sales improving and market share increasing compared to the previous Kantar period."
