Asian Dollar Bond Market to Experience a 20% Surge in 2025

The Asian dollar bond market is set to grow by an estimated 20% in 2025 compared to the previous year, with significant contributions from Chinese debt deals, bolstered by recent U.S. interest rate cuts. Source indicates that the Federal Reserve's decision to lower policy rates by a full percentage point has made it more favorable for companies to issue dollar bonds rather than securing funds in local currencies.

With at least $6 billion worth of dollar bonds issued in the early days of 2025, major players like the Export-Import Bank of Korea and China Hongqiao Group have already priced their deals. Rishi Jalan, Citigroup's Asia Pacific debt syndicate head, predicts that the total issuance from Asia, excluding Japan and Australia, will reach approximately $220-$225 billion, up from $175 billion in 2024.

As reported by IndexBox, the Chinese market is poised to be a driving force in this surge, with notable growth in the country's technology sector. Chinese firms, such as Alibaba and Meituan, collectively raised $7.5 billion in dollar bonds last year, a trend expected to continue as these entities seek to pay down existing debt and secure capital for future expansion. In 2024, China issued $77.1 billion in dollar bonds, highlighting an 81% increase from the previous year, although still below the $210.5 billion peak of 2019.

However, the country's beleaguered property sector is unlikely to contribute to this growth due to ongoing market challenges. Across the region, South Korean dollar bond issuance rose by 14.5% in 2024, reaching nearly $50 billion. Despite this increase, political instability may deter further investment in South Korean markets, with investors potentially waiting for more stability before proceeding with new deals.
