Asian Markets See Gains Following Strong Week in U.S. Stocks
Asian shares showed impressive growth early Monday, supported by the rally in U.S. stock indexes, which recorded their best week in two months. More details can be found in the full report published on January 20, 2025.
The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong jumped by 2.3% to 20,041.09, as China's central bank kept key lending rates steady and the Shanghai Composite index rose by 0.5% to 3,257.24. Meanwhile, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index climbed 1.2% to 38,914.60 amid growing anticipation that Japan's central bank might increase its interest rates this coming week. The currency markets saw the dollar trade at 156.02 yen, reflecting a slip from 156.31 yen.
The Euro also saw an increase, trading at $1.0304 from a previous $1.0281. In South Korea, the Kospi index held steady at 2,524.12, and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose by 0.5% to 8,354.90. Taiwan's Taiex and India's Sensex indices saw gains of 0.5% and 0.2% respectively, while Bangkok's SET increased by 0.3%.
Commodities showed little movement with U.S. benchmark crude oil losing 2 cents to $77.37 per barrel and Brent crude dropping 13 cents to $80.66 per barrel. Last week, the S&P 500 appreciated by 1% to 5,996.66, marking its first positive week in three. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.8% to 43,487.83, with the Nasdaq composite advancing 1.5% to 19,630.20.
The notable performer was SLB, a key player in oilfield services, which soared by 6.1% after surpassing analysts' expectations with its profit and revenue for the latter part of 2024. The company not only increased its dividend by 3.6% but also committed to returning $2.3 billion to investors via stock buybacks.
Big Tech companies, collectively known as the "Magnificent Seven," also contributed to market strength. Stocks such as Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla all experienced rises.
This resurgence in markets follows easing concerns over U.S. inflation, leading to hopes of further interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. The year kicked off with rate cuts that quashed inflationary pressures while bolstering investment values, despite potential risks of inflation rebound.
Treasury Yields and Profit Reports Impact Markets
Treasury yields dropped sharply, with the 10-year Treasury yield decreasing to 4.61% from a previous 4.62% on Thursday and 4.76% a week earlier. Financial firms like Truist Financial also registered significant gains, with shares rising by 5.9%. The bank reported better-than-expected end-of-year profits for 2024, following in the footsteps of major rivals such as Wells Fargo and Citigroup.
