Asian Markets Show Mixed Movements As Investors Look to 2025

In the closing days of the year, Asian stocks demonstrated varied performance as market participants cast their gaze toward 2025, a year expected to bring measured interest rate cuts from the U.S. Federal Reserve. According to a report by Ankur Banerjee in Reuters, the steady U.S. dollar has kept the yen near five-month lows during subdued year-end trading.

The ongoing anticipation of potential rate hikes by the Bank of Japan, reinforced by insights from the summary of opinions at their December meeting, could lead to changes as soon as January. Despite the recent decisions to hold rates steady, the yen stood at 157.80 per dollar, having depreciated over 10% against the dollar in 2024, marking the fourth consecutive year of decline.

IndexBox data shows that while MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan showed a slight uptick to 574.88, indicating close to a 9% annual gain. Japan's Nikkei climbed by 0.77%, potentially closing 2024 with a remarkable 19% rise, driven by a weaker yen.

China's key CSI300 Index remained largely unchanged in early trading, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index rose by 0.12%, rebounding post-holiday.

The U.S. Federal Reserve's strategy is critical to many investors planning for 2025, with the world closely watching the implications of the impending Trump administration's tariff strategies and geopolitical tensions. The Fed had previously reduced rates by 25 basis points in December, expecting just two cuts in the new year, a decrease from the four cuts projected in September. Meanwhile, 10-year Treasury yields have risen to the highest level since early May, recorded at 4.57% during Asian trading hours.

In the commodities market, gold prices slightly decreased to $2,631.34 per ounce, despite a strong yearly ascent of approximately 28%, the most significant annual growth since 2011. Meanwhile, both Brent crude futures and U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude saw a modest reduction of 0.1% in early trading.
