Asian Tech Fundraising Expected to Rise Due to AI and Regional Strengths

Amidst a backdrop of technological advancements and regional economic resilience, Citi forecasts increased momentum in Asian fundraising for tech companies, especially into 2025. The detailed insights can be found in a recent report by Reuters. According to Citi, already strong activity in India and Taiwan, coupled with progress in artificial intelligence, is set to drive a fundraising boom.

The Wall Street bank, having led fundraising initiatives for tech entities across Asia (excluding Japan), projects an impressive 10% rise in fundraising volumes within the technology, media, and telecom sectors this year, building upon the $70 billion recorded in 2024. As per data from IndexBox, the pivotal role of AI-driven funding, which encompasses the hardware supply chain as well as digital infrastructure including data centers, towers, and fiber, is expected to remain a steadfast contributor to fundraising activities.

Ho-Yin Lee, the Hong Kong-based head of Asia investment banking at Citi, emphasized the dominance of AI in shaping financial strategies, stating, "The AI theme is very important and will continue to dominate. I think this year we are going to see more focus... around practical applications and the benefits AI can create for a company's financials." Lee reassured stakeholders of the sector's preparedness for potential policy impacts arising from Donald Trump's anticipated return to the U.S. presidency, including his announcement of a private sector investment of up to $500 billion towards AI infrastructure.

Further emphasizing strong regional dynamics, Lee highlighted the favorable deal-making environment in India and the anticipated continuation of Taiwan's robust hardware supply chain activities. Hong Kong is also poised to see several initial public offerings enter the market. These developments come in contrast to the dip experienced in pan-APAC new listings, where a notable 33% decline was observed in 2024 compared to the prior year, majorly attributed to a 74% downturn in fundraising from China, which previously anchored regional dealmaking.

Citi's prominent role in regional fundraising is evidenced by their assistance to Asian clients outside Japan in raising $4 billion via equity share sales and an additional $2 billion through debt issuance in 2024. This surpasses achievements by other rival banks in the Asia ex-Japan region, noted by the industry data. Noteworthy transactions include Alibaba's $5 billion convertible bond issuance and the $3.8 billion acquisition of Future Electronics by Taiwan's WT Microelectronics.
