Assofermet Challenges EU Proposal to Tighten Steel Import Safeguards

The Italian association Assofermet has voiced its opposition to the EU's plan to further tighten safeguards on steel imports. The association, representing Italian distributors of scrap, raw materials, and steel products, argues that such measures could exacerbate existing structural issues in the European steel market.

Assofermet contends that the problem lies with the persistent lack of demand from steel-consuming sectors rather than with import flows. The association suggests that instead of imposing restrictive trade policies, the focus should be on stimulating consumption and demand for steel through comprehensive economic strategies.

The Assofermet association warns that extending protective measures could introduce new uncertainties to the industry and elevate costs for the EU manufacturing sector, especially when measures duplicate those of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Despite these proposed changes, Assofermet recommends a flexible tariff quota system to enhance the current scenario.

Furthermore, Assofermet advocates for the EU to better align regulatory systems with existing EU legislation and WTO rules, emphasizing the need to consolidate existing measures rather than extend them further. This sentiment follows a separate proposal from the European Steel Association urging the EU Commission to slash import quotas for flat products by 50%, attempting to re-balance domestic production and imports.
