Australian Aluminum Price Falls to $2,378 per Ton, Ending Three Months of Contraction

Australia Aluminum Export Price in May 2023

In May 2023, the aluminum price stood at $2,378 per ton (FOB, Australia), flattening at the previous month. In general, the export price showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 2% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $3,290 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to May 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In May 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to Malaysia ($2,862 per ton) and Indonesia ($2,697 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($2,236 per ton) and Thailand ($2,303 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (-0.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Australia Aluminum Export Prices by Type

Average prices varied noticeably for the major types of exported product. In May 2023, the product with the highest price was aluminum (unwrought, not alloyed) ($2,380 per ton), while the average price for exports of unwrought aluminium alloys totaled $2,359 per ton.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: aluminium (-2.5%).

In May 2023, approximately 143K tons of aluminum were exported from Australia; rising by 69% on the previous month. Overall, total exports indicated moderate growth from May 2022 to May 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +4.6% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on May 2023 figures, exports decreased by -3.0% against March 2023 indices.

In value terms, aluminum exports skyrocketed to $340M (IndexBox estimates) in May 2023. In general, total exports indicated a slight expansion from May 2022 to May 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on May 2023 figures, exports decreased by -8.3% against March 2023 indices.

Australia Aluminum Exports by Type

Aluminum (unwrought, not alloyed) (130K tons) was the largest type of aluminum exported from Australia, with a 91% share of total exports. Moreover, aluminum (unwrought, not alloyed) exceeded the volume of the second product type, unwrought aluminium alloys (13K tons), tenfold.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of aluminum (unwrought, not alloyed) stood at +5.4%.

In value terms, aluminum (unwrought, not alloyed) ($309M) remains the largest type of aluminum exported from Australia, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by unwrought aluminium alloys ($32M), with a 9.3% share of total exports.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of aluminum (unwrought, not alloyed) stood at +2.8%.

Australia Aluminum Exports by Country

South Korea (54K tons), Japan (41K tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (11K tons) were the main destinations of aluminum exports from Australia, together comprising 74% of total exports.

From May 2022 to May 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by South Korea (with a CAGR of +12.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Korea ($129M), Japan ($95M) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($28M) appeared to be the largest markets for aluminum exported from Australia worldwide, together accounting for 74% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, South Korea, with a CAGR of +10.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
