Australia Chicken Meat Exports
For the third consecutive month, Australia recorded decline in overseas shipments of chicken meat, which decreased by -3.8% to 4K tons in November 2023. In general, exports showed a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2023 when exports increased by 27% against the previous month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 5.1K tons. From September 2023 to November 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, chicken meat exports reduced to $7.6M (IndexBox estimates) in November 2023. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2023 when exports increased by 28% m-o-m.

Exports by Country
Papua New Guinea (1.8K tons) was the main destination for chicken meat exports from Australia, accounting for a 45% share of total exports. Moreover, chicken meat exports to Papua New Guinea exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Vanuatu (583 tons), threefold. Solomon Islands (449 tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.
From November 2022 to November 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to Papua New Guinea was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Vanuatu (-0.6% per month) and Solomon Islands (-2.3% per month).
In value terms, Papua New Guinea ($3.1M) remains the key foreign market for chicken meat exports from Australia, comprising 40% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vanuatu ($1.4M), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Solomon Islands, with a 12% share.
From November 2022 to November 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to Papua New Guinea was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Vanuatu (+0.3% per month) and Solomon Islands (-2.1% per month).
Exports by Type
Frozen cuts of chicken (3.8K tons) was the largest type of chicken meat exported from Australia, accounting for a 96% share of total exports. Moreover, frozen cuts of chicken exceeded the volume of the second product type, frozen whole chickens (150 tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by fresh or chilled cuts of chicken (25 tons), with a 0.6% share.
From November 2022 to November 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of frozen cuts of chicken stood at -1.2%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: frozen whole chickens (-9.6% per month) and fresh or chilled cuts of chicken (-0.5% per month).
In value terms, frozen cuts of chicken ($7.1M) remains the largest type of chicken meat exported from Australia, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by frozen whole chickens ($304K), with a 4% share of total exports. It was followed by fresh or chilled cuts of chicken, with a 2.7% share.
From November 2022 to November 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of frozen cuts of chicken was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: frozen whole chickens (-8.1% per month) and fresh or chilled cuts of chicken (-0.3% per month).
Export Prices by Country
In November 2023, the chicken meat price stood at $1,908 per ton (FOB, Australia), which is down by -5.8% against the previous month. Over the period from November 2022 to November 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in September 2023 when the average export price increased by 21% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $2,064 per ton. From October 2023 to November 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In November 2023, the country with the highest price was Vanuatu ($2,403 per ton), while the average price for exports to Benin ($1,028 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From November 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Africa (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
