Australia's Export of Evaporated and Condensed Milk Declines Slightly to $107M in 2023

In 2023, overseas shipments of evaporated and condensed milk decreased by -12.7% to 45K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 54%. The exports peaked at 53K tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, evaporated and condensed milk exports declined slightly to $107M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, exports, however, posted prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 40%. Exports by Country

Malaysia (10K tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (9.9K tons) and China (6.1K tons) were the main destinations of evaporated and condensed milk exports from Australia, with a combined 59% share of total exports. Qatar, New Zealand, Vietnam, Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Qatar (with a CAGR of +206.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($28M), Malaysia ($27M) and Qatar ($11M) constituted the largest markets for evaporated and condensed milk exported from Australia worldwide, together accounting for 62% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Qatar, with a CAGR of +132.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports by Type

Condensed or evaporated milk (unsweetened) (28K tons) and condensed or evaporated milk (sweetened) (17K tons) were the main products of evaporated and condensed milk exports from Australia.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by condensed or evaporated milk (unsweetened) (with a CAGR of +20.1%).

In value terms, condensed or evaporated milk (unsweetened) ($76M) remains the largest type of evaporated and condensed milk exported from Australia, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by condensed or evaporated milk (sweetened) ($31M), with a 29% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the value of condensed or evaporated milk (unsweetened) exports totaled +19.7%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the evaporated and condensed milk price stood at $2,362 per ton (FOB, Australia), surging by 9.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $2,600 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($4,764 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($1,507 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
