In 2023, overseas purchases of stamps for use in the hand decreased by -42.1% to 175K units, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 619K units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hand stamp imports declined remarkably to $4.7M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, imports saw a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 43%. Imports by Country

In 2023, China (79K units) constituted the largest hand stamp supplier to Australia, accounting for a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, hand stamp imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (33K units), twofold. Taiwan (Chinese) (12K units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.9% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at -10.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-5.4% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-10.6% per year).

In value terms, China ($2.1M) constituted the largest supplier of stamps for use in the hand to Australia, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($889K), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 6.9% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-4.7% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-3.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the hand stamp price stood at $27 per unit (CIF, Australia), with an increase of 1.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 48%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2023 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from South Korea ($27 per unit) and Japan ($27 per unit), while the price for Hong Kong ($27 per unit) and China ($27 per unit) were amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+22.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
