Australia Luggage Imports
In 2023, purchases abroad of luggage and handbags increased by 5.5% to 48M units, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by +64.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when imports increased by 29%. Imports peaked in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, luggage imports shrank to $852M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $892M, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country
In 2023, China (40M units) constituted the largest luggage supplier to Australia, with a 84% share of total imports. Moreover, luggage imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (3.1M units), more than tenfold. Vietnam (580K units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.2% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +3.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+13.5% per year) and Vietnam (+13.8% per year).
In value terms, the largest luggage suppliers to Australia were China ($277M), Italy ($232M) and France ($195M), with a combined 83% share of total imports. India, Spain, Vietnam and Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.6%.
Cambodia, with a CAGR of +92.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Handbags with outer surface of plastic sheeting or of textile materials (22M units), cases and containers; trunks, suit-cases, vanity-cases, executive-cases, brief-cases, school satchels and similar containers, with outer surface of plastics or of textile materials (15M units) and travel sets; for personal toilet, sewing, shoe or clothes cleaning (7.2M units) were the main products of luggage imports to Australia, with a combined 93% share of total imports.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by handbags with outer surface of plastic sheeting or of textile materials (with a CAGR of +6.5%), while imports for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, luggage and handbags with the largest imports in Australia were handbags with outer surface of leather, composition leather, or patent leather ($400M), handbags with outer surface of plastic sheeting or of textile materials ($228M) and cases and containers; trunks, suit-cases, vanity-cases, executive-cases, brief-cases, school satchels and similar containers, with outer surface of plastics or of textile materials ($197M), together comprising 97% of total imports. Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the luggage price stood at $18 per unit (CIF, Australia), falling by -9.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the average import price increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $20 per unit in 2022, and then declined in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($9.2 per unit), while the price for China stood at $6.9 per unit.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (-1.2%).
