Australia Meat Exports
In July 2023, exports of meat from Australia expanded to 168K tons, surging by 2.6% against June 2023 figures. Overall, total exports indicated measured growth from July 2022 to July 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +2.5% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, exports increased by +4.2% against March 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 with an increase of 38% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in July 2023.
In value terms, meat exports expanded to $1B (IndexBox estimates) in July 2023. Over the period under review, exports saw a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 with an increase of 30% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in July 2023.

Exports by Country
The United States (36K tons), China (34K tons) and South Korea (21K tons) were the main destinations of meat exports from Australia, together accounting for 54% of total exports.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the biggest increases were in the United States (with a CAGR of +5.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($271M), China ($189M) and South Korea ($141M) appeared to be the largest markets for meat exported from Australia worldwide, together accounting for 57% of total exports. Japan, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
Among the main countries of destination, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +4.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports by Type
Beef (cattle meat) (111K tons) was the largest type of meat exported from Australia, accounting for a 66% share of total exports. Moreover, beef (cattle meat) exceeded the volume of the second product type, lamb and sheep meat (49K tons), twofold. Pork (4.1K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.5% share.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of beef (cattle meat) totaled +2.3%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: lamb and sheep meat (+2.7% per month) and pork (+4.4% per month).
In value terms, beef (cattle meat) ($747M) remains the largest type of meat exported from Australia, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by lamb and sheep meat ($267M), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by goat meat, with a 1.4% share.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of beef (cattle meat) totaled +1.1%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: lamb and sheep meat (+0.3% per month) and goat meat (+1.0% per month).
Export Prices by Country
In July 2023, the meat price amounted to $6,230 per ton (FOB, Australia), standing approximately at the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2023 when the average export price increased by 4.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $7,485 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($7,546 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Philippines ($3,250 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Papua New Guinea (+0.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
