Australia Mixed Fertilizer Imports
In 2023, supplies from abroad of mixed fertilizers decreased by -32.8% to 919K tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 40%. Imports peaked at 1.6M tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, mixed fertilizer imports contracted rapidly to $619M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 82%. Imports peaked at $1.2B in 2022, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country
Saudi Arabia (283K tons), China (275K tons) and Morocco (158K tons) were the main suppliers of mixed fertilizer imports to Australia, with a combined 78% share of total imports. the United States, Jordan and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by South Korea (with a CAGR of +142.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest mixed fertilizer suppliers to Australia were Saudi Arabia ($195M), China ($186M) and Morocco ($104M), together comprising 78% of total imports. the United States, Jordan and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
In terms of the main suppliers, South Korea, with a CAGR of +155.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports by Type
In 2023, monoammonium phosphate (MAP) (795K tons) constituted the largest type of mixed fertilizers supplied to Australia, with a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, monoammonium phosphate (MAP) exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, diammonium phosphate (83K tons), tenfold. Fertilizers, mineral or chemical; containing the two fertilizing elements nitrogen and phosphorus, other than nitrates and phosphates (28K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of monoammonium phosphate (MAP) imports amounted to +2.9%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: diammonium phosphate (-9.8% per year) and fertilizers, mineral or chemical; containing the two fertilizing elements nitrogen and phosphorus, other than nitrates and phosphates (-2.5% per year).
In value terms, monoammonium phosphate (MAP) ($538M) constituted the largest type of mixed fertilizers supplied to Australia, comprising 87% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by diammonium phosphate ($55M), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by fertilizers, mineral or chemical; containing the two fertilizing elements nitrogen and phosphorus, other than nitrates and phosphates, with a 2.7% share.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the mixed fertilizer price stood at $674 per ton (CIF, Australia), with a decrease of -21.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a notable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when the average import price increased by 66%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $862 per ton, and then fell notably in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Jordan ($713 per ton) and Saudi Arabia ($691 per ton), while the price for South Korea ($516 per ton) and the United States ($644 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+8.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
