In September 2023, approximately 7.2K units of motorcycles and scooters were imported into Australia; with a decrease of -32.9% against August 2023. Overall, imports showed a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2023 when imports increased by 68% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 13K units in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to September 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, motorcycle and scooter imports shrank markedly to $32M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2023 with an increase of 59% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at 78M units in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to September 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

Japan (1.4K units), Austria (1.3K units) and China (1.3K units) were the main suppliers of motorcycle and scooter imports to Australia, with a combined 56% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Thailand, Indonesia, India and Italy, which together accounted for a further 26%.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by motorcycles (including mopeds) and cycles; fitted with auxiliary motor, reciprocating internal combustion piston engine of cylinder capacity exceeding 500cc but not exceeding 800cc, with or without sidecars; side-cars (with a CAGR of +0.0%), while imports for the other products experienced a decline.

These products were followed by motorcycles (including mopeds) and cycles; fitted with auxiliary motor, reciprocating internal combustion piston engine of cylinder capacity exceeding 500cc but not exceeding 800cc, with or without sidecars; side-cars, which accounted for a further 18%.
Import Prices by Country
In September 2023, the motorcycle and scooter price amounted to $4,492 per unit (CIF, Australia), which is down by -20.1% against the previous month. Overall, the import price saw a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 11% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $6,347 per unit in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to September 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Italy ($8,406 per unit), while the price for China ($1,346 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
