Australia Nitrogenous Fertilizer Imports
In 2023, overseas purchases of nitrogenous fertilizers (mineral or chemical) increased by 12% to 4.1M tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by +62.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, nitrogenous fertilizer imports shrank sharply to $1.6B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, imports enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 73%. Imports peaked at $2.6B in 2022, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country
the United Arab Emirates (776K tons), Qatar (642K tons) and Saudi Arabia (608K tons) were the main suppliers of nitrogenous fertilizer imports to Australia, with a combined 49% share of total imports. the United States, China, Malaysia and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the United States (with a CAGR of +77.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest nitrogenous fertilizer suppliers to Australia were the United Arab Emirates ($309M), Qatar ($235M) and Saudi Arabia ($220M), with a combined 48% share of total imports. the United States, Malaysia, China and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.
In terms of the main suppliers, the United States, with a CAGR of +65.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports by Type
In 2023, urea (3.2M tons) constituted the largest type of nitrogenous fertilizers (mineral or chemical) supplied to Australia, accounting for a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, urea exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, mixtures of urea and ammonium nitrate in aqueous or ammoniacal solution (428K tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by ammonium sulphate (287K tons), with a 7% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of urea imports stood at +6.2%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: mixtures of urea and ammonium nitrate in aqueous or ammoniacal solution (+11.5% per year) and ammonium sulphate (+16.6% per year).
In value terms, urea ($1.2B) constituted the largest type of nitrogenous fertilizers (mineral or chemical) supplied to Australia, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by mixtures of urea and ammonium nitrate in aqueous or ammoniacal solution ($162M), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by ammonium nitrate, with a 7.3% share.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the nitrogenous fertilizer price stood at $389 per ton (CIF, Australia), dropping by -44.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 an increase of 71%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $706 per ton, and then fell significantly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($467 per ton), while the price for China ($294 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
