Australia Preserved Beef Exports
In 2023, shipments abroad of beef and veal (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) increased by 91% to 41 tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 with an increase of 158%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at 185 tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, preserved beef exports reached $278K (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports, however, faced a sharp slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when exports increased by 112% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $3.7M in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country
Indonesia (33 tons) was the main destination for preserved beef exports from Australia, accounting for a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, preserved beef exports to Indonesia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Korea (3.6 tons), ninefold. Qatar (1.5 tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.7% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Indonesia stood at +76.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (-7.5% per year) and Qatar (-1.3% per year).
In value terms, Indonesia ($150K) emerged as the key foreign market for beef and veal (salted, in brine, dried or smoked) exports from Australia, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($47K), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 11% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value to Indonesia amounted to +57.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (-8.2% per year) and Vietnam (-0.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the preserved beef price amounted to $6,834 per ton (FOB, Australia), with a decrease of -47.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 115% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $27,931 per ton. From 2021 to 2023, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($33,805 per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($4,594 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Papua New Guinea (+23.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
