Australia Synthetic Yarn Imports
In 2023, imports of yarn of synthetic or artificial staple fibers into Australia fell rapidly to 2.2K tons, shrinking by -26.3% compared with the previous year. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 3.9K tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, synthetic yarn imports reduced remarkably to $14M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $23M in 2022, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country
India (932 tons), China (709 tons) and Indonesia (369 tons) were the main suppliers of synthetic yarn imports to Australia, with a combined 91% share of total imports.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +2.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, India ($5.6M), China ($4.1M) and Germany ($1.7M) appeared to be the largest synthetic yarn suppliers to Australia, together accounting for 82% of total imports.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for yarn (not sewing thread), of man-made staple fibres, put up for retail sale (with a CAGR of +2.6%), while purchases for the other products experienced a decline.
In value terms, yarn of synthetic or artificial staple fibers with the largest imports in Australia were yarn (not sewing thread), of man-made staple fibres, put up for retail sale ($7.9M), yarn (other than sewing thread) of synthetic staple fibres, not put up for retail sale ($4.8M) and yarn (other than sewing thread) of artificial staple fibres, not put up for retail sale ($1.2M).
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the synthetic yarn price amounted to $6,313 per ton (CIF, Australia), shrinking by -18.7% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated tangible growth from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, synthetic yarn import price increased by +14.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 45% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($38,565 per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($3,077 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
