Australia Turkey Meat Exports
In September 2023, shipments abroad of turkey meat increased by 186% to 140 tons, rising for the second month in a row after three months of decline. In general, exports posted prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in October 2022 when exports increased by 436% month-to-month.
In value terms, turkey meat exports fell to $333K (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. Overall, exports recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2023 with an increase of 880% against the previous month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $378K, and then declined in the following month.

Exports by Country
South Africa (124 tons) was the main destination for turkey meat exports from Australia, with a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, turkey meat exports to South Africa exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Papua New Guinea (13 tons), ninefold.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to South Africa stood at +2.9%.
In value terms, South Africa ($201K) and Papua New Guinea ($113K) appeared to be the largest markets for turkey meat exported from Australia worldwide.
Among the main countries of destination, Papua New Guinea, with a CAGR of +51.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review.
Exports by Type
Frozen turkey cuts (137 tons) was the largest type of turkey meat exported from Australia, accounting for a 98% share of total exports. It was followed by frozen whole turkeys (2.5 tons), with a 1.8% share of total exports.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of frozen turkey cuts stood at +41.2%.
In value terms, frozen turkey cuts ($314K) remains the largest type of turkey meat exported from Australia, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by frozen whole turkeys ($20K), with a 5.9% share of total exports.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of frozen turkey cuts stood at +36.9%.
Export Prices by Country
In September 2023, the turkey meat price amounted to $2,385 per ton (FOB, Australia), falling by -69.2% against the previous month. In general, the export price saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2023 an increase of 386% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $7,745 per ton, and then declined rapidly in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Papua New Guinea ($8,533 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($1,621 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Papua New Guinea (+8.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
