Umbrella Imports in Australia Drop Sharply to $40M in 2023

In 2023, overseas purchases of umbrellas decreased by -32.2% to 5.8M units for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. Imports peaked at 8.6M units in 2022, and then shrank notably in the following year.

In value terms, umbrella imports dropped remarkably to $40M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, imports, however, recorded perceptible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 93%. Imports by Country

In 2023, China (5.7M units) was the main umbrella supplier to Australia, accounting for a 97% share of total imports. It was followed by New Zealand (50K units), with a 0.9% share of total imports.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest.

In value terms, China ($37M) constituted the largest supplier of umbrellas to Australia, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by New Zealand ($688K), with a 1.7% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the umbrella price amounted to $6.9 per unit (CIF, Australia), dropping by -4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated measured growth from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, umbrella import price decreased by -24.3% against 2021 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 32%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $9.1 per unit. From 2022 to 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for China.
