Bank Indonesia Set to Maintain Rates Amid Currency Concerns

Bank Indonesia (BI) is expected to keep its key interest rate steady this week, according to a recent Reuters poll. This decision comes in light of recent pressures on the rupiah, which has seen a near 6% decline against the U.S. dollar since its peak in September.

Despite domestic economic conditions like softening growth and cooling inflation suggesting a rate cut, the central bank is mandated to maintain currency stability, prompting caution among policymakers. According to IndexBox data, this trend of curbing aggressive rate cuts is mirrored globally, as expectations from key economic players like the U.S. Federal Reserve also align on a more conservative stance with predicted 75 basis point cuts anticipated over the next two years.

Over half of the economists surveyed, 17 out of 31, believe BI will maintain its benchmark seven-day reverse repurchase rate at 6.00% this month. Radhika Rao of DBS Bank stated, "While inflation and growth developments support some dovishness, the current weakness in the currency adds a significant challenge for policymakers." Meanwhile, a substantial minority still expects a potential quarter-point rate cut due to low inflation and moderated domestic consumption.

This outlook reflects broader economic sentiments influenced by U.S. policies that could drive inflation and keep the dollar strong, potentially limiting room for more aggressive rate cuts worldwide.
