Bank of Canada Set to Adjust Interest Rates Amid Trade Uncertainty

The Bank of Canada is expected to announce an interest rate cut on Wednesday, reducing it by a quarter percentage point in light of ongoing concerns over potential US tariffs, according to a report by Bloomberg. Policymakers, led by Governor Tiff Macklem, are anticipated to lower the policy interest rate to 3%, marking the lowest point since September 2022, as the central bank navigates the uncertainties in trade policy.

Market analysts have highlighted the looming threat of tariffs introduced by former US President Donald Trump, which could negatively impact Canada's efforts to maintain a stable economic environment. Economic indicators currently suggest that the Canadian economy remains mostly steady, with projected growth averaging 1.8% this year, although inflation is expected to remain below the central bank's 2% target, according to data from IndexBox.

Despite the relative stability, Lawrence Schembri, a former deputy governor, noted that the central bank must be cautious about weight given to potential trade policy changes when setting interest rates, as such policies remain undefined at this time.
