Bank of Japan Likely to Maintain Interest Rates Steady, Survey Finds

Market expectations indicate that the Bank of Japan (BOJ) is likely to keep interest rates unchanged at its upcoming policy meeting, with over 90% of market participants sharing this sentiment. According to a report by Reuters, a survey conducted by Ueda Yagi Tanshi targets 150 banks, securities firms, insurers, and other financial institutions ahead of the BOJ's meeting concluding on Thursday.

The survey results reveal that 91% of respondents anticipate that the central bank will maintain the current short-term interest rate at 0.25%. This comes after the BOJ ceased its negative interest rate policy in March and adjusted its short-term policy target rate upward to 0.25% in July. The bank has expressed willingness to implement further hikes if domestic economic conditions, such as wage growth and inflation, meet targeted expectations.

Data from the IndexBox platform further elucidates Japan's economic context amidst these monetary decisions. It highlights modest growth in Japan's economy driven by several sectors, such as manufacturing and electronics, although persistent global risks and fluctuating currency values pose challenges. Furthermore, 95% of the survey respondents foresee an increase in the overnight call rate—the BOJ's policy target—three months from now. This marks a significant rise in expectations from the previous figure of 67% recorded in October.

While economists remain divided, with recent polls indicating a shift in expectations towards maintaining steady rates, the BOJ's final decision remains to be seen. Nonetheless, the central bank has maintained caution and is focusing on evaluating overseas economic risks and gathering insights on next year's wage prospects before committing to any rate adjustments.
