This insight comes from former BOJ board member Makoto Sakurai in an interview with Reuters, highlighting the central bank's plans to capitalize on broadening wage hikes, sustainable price rises, and solid economic growth (source).

Amidst these developments, IndexBox data indicates Japan's core consumer inflation accelerated to 3.0% in December, the fastest pace in 16 months. This inflation spike, surpassing the BOJ's 2% target for nearly three consecutive years, underscores the rationale behind the anticipated rate hikes. The BOJ's recent decision to increase short-term interest rates to 0.5%, a level not reached since the 2008 global financial crisis, exemplifies this strategic economic oversight.

Governor Kazuo Ueda has signaled the central bank's readiness to continue raising rates should the economic recovery persist, though the specific timing remains uncertain. According to Sakurai, political factors, particularly the impending upper house election and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's coalition's weakened standing, could influence the timing of subsequent rate hikes.

The BOJ is set to convene on March 18-19 for its policy meeting, followed by another session on April 30-May 1, during which new quarterly growth and inflation forecasts will be released.
