The Bank of Japan (BOJ) is preparing to increase its short-term interest rates barring any destabilizing events coinciding with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration. According to a report by Reuters, the BOJ's potential rate hike aims to elevate short-term borrowing costs, a level not seen since the 2008 financial crisis.

Currently, the BOJ's short-term policy rate stands at 0.25%, but it's anticipated that it may be raised to 0.5% at the conclusion of the two-day meeting ending this Friday. This shift aligns with the bank's broader goal to approach a 1% rate, a figure perceived by analysts as neither hindering nor overly stimulating the Japanese economy.

An update to the BOJ's quarterly outlook report is expected to reveal increased price forecasts, reflecting growing expectations that enhanced wage growth will support Japan's path to consistently achieving the central bank's 2% inflation target. Notably, Japan has already met or exceeded this target for nearly three consecutive years.

The expected increase, the first since July of last year, highlights the central bank's intention to carefully communicate potential policy changes, driven by Governor Kazuo Ueda's earlier signals. These signals contributed to a rebound in the yen as market predictions indicated an approximately 80% likelihood of a rate rise.
