Bank of Mexico Takes Bold Steps in New Inflation Fight Phase

The Mexican inflationary landscape has prompted policymakers to continue trimming the benchmark interest rate, as highlighted in an enlightening interview given to Reuters by the head of the Bank of Mexico. As the battle against inflation moves into a new chapter, the Mexican central bank, Banxico, made a decisive move on Thursday by cutting the key interest rate by 50 basis points, bringing it down to 9.50%.

This revision distinctly contrasts the previous series of 25-basis-point reductions that followed the high watermark interest rate of 11.25% recorded in March 2024. "Our work is not over. The fight against inflation is now in a new phase," Banxico Governor Victoria Rodriguez emphasized during her late Sunday interview, indicating the broader implications for Mexico's monetary policy.

According to data provided by IndexBox, Mexico's inflation rate dropped to 3.69% in the first half of January, marking the lowest level for headline inflation since early 2021. This figure places it comfortably within the bank's target inflation range of 3%, with a permissible fluctuation of one percentage point either way. The current interest rate is at its lowest since September 2022, facilitating a more accommodative monetary environment conducive to combatting inflation.

While the Mexican peso and domestic stocks have faced persistent volatility amid potential U.S. tariffs on exports—tariffs currently delayed until March 1 due to a bilateral pact—Rodriguez remains optimistic. "We are confident authorities of both countries will work to find greater cooperation and lasting solutions, although we, of course, remain attentive to what might be said in March," she noted.

Even as some analysts project the possible ramifications of tariffs leading to recession or "stagflation", Rodriguez assures that Banxico will act to maintain the orderly functioning of Mexico's financial markets. She reiterated the critical role of trade integration as a significant growth driver, asserting Mexican involvement in U.S. production chains boosts consumer access to competitively priced goods.
